A follow up note from VAL...
We have a dear friend that came from Nicaragua to avoid persecution. He had to go thru the process of getting all of his documentation PLUS take courses again to qualify to practice medicine here in the US. Max & I were honored to be a part of the process of his becoming an American citizen. We bought him a little something in remembrance. What amazed us is that he bought US something in remembrance also. Luckily, he had hoarded money and was able to live comfortably while becoming a citizen. That is NOT the norm!! He eventually was able to bring the rest of his family over also. All of it was high stress for him as they were risking their lives to get here. He's now one of the best neonatologists (critical newborns) in his home town.
